The photographic collection Les Sauvages explores the dual identity of man, his vacillation between his civilized and primitive self. His underlying animal nature, repressed within the civilized environment, can easily come to light, express itself and even dominate the civilized 'I'.
The work narrates such a dystopia: a former man-made environment, reoccupied by nature, has as its central protagonist man, stripped of his cultural characteristics, in a state of animal survival. The narration is violent, raw, chaotic but at the same time completely honest in its nakedness.
The idea of the savages (Les Sauvages) started from the "theory of the evil twin" in which every person has an evil self, which at any moment can usurp the life of the first, acting destructively. In this Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde situation the good is called to suppress, to eliminate the evil, but is ultimately led to total self-destruction.
In the primitive animal realm, the opposites of good and evil do not apply. All there is, is survival and reproduction. These are the forces that still move the world, despite all the efforts of civilized man to distance himself from the animal.
